    • Building Permit
    • It is likely that you will require a building permit.
Nearly anything that is built requires a building permit. South Gippsland Shire Council does not issue building permits so you will need to contact a private building surveyor to complete an application.

A building permit may be required if you need:

      • Internal fit outs or alterations to your premises
Structural alterations to the exterior of the building (including increasing window and door sizes)
      • To increase the number of people that can occupy your building at any one time
      • Changing the business from what it currently is
      • Alter any essential safety measures (i.e. fire hydrant, fire hose reels, exit signs, emergency lighting or paths of travel to an exit).

You can find more information at the Victorian Building Authority website. You can view a list of private building surveyors on Council's website.

    • You will require food registration.
If you are planning to operate a business (including a hobby business) that involves the sale of food then you will need to register with Council. The definition of sale includes food given away for free as part of another service (e.g. bed and breakfasts) or as part of a promotion or as a prize or reward.

You can find more information on Council's website.

    • Accommodation Business
    • You many need to register your accommodation business with Council.

All temporary or mobile food premises must be registered through Streatrader.
