Dance Rites is Australia’s national Indigenous dance Competition, and will be held at Sydney Opera House on November 23 and 24 2019.
- Groups from across the nation will share their traditional culture and compete for the $20,000 Dance Rites prize.
- The runner up will receive a prize of $5,000.
- The competition is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who have or would like to develop a dance group, and performers of all levels of experience.
- Each group will present a welcome/arrival and farewell dance, one of which must include a chant in local language.
- The third dance is to be your group’s Wildcard Dance. This is to fuse the contemporary with the traditional! The group with the highest scored Wildcard dance will receive a prize of $3,000.
- The Rites of Passage prize was introduced in 2018. This award acknowledges a groups commitment to revitalising knowledge and practice, and celebrates the transfer of knowledge between generations. The Rites of Passage Winner will receive a prize of $4,000.

- Complete the form and include registration fee payment details*
- Return the form to Sydney Opera House, via email to dancerites@sydneyoperahouse.com or by post to Dance Rites, Sydney Opera House, GPO Box 4274, Sydney, NSW 2001
- On receiving your registration form the Dance Rites team will contact you to provide further information and support. We can provide fundraising ideas, workshop opportunities and logistical support.
- Places are strictly limited, please return your registration early to avoid missing a place in the competition.
*Payment must be received by the close of registration date on Friday 27 September 2019 in order to secure your place in the Competition.

Who can compete in Dance Rites?
- Dance Rites is open to all Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community dance groups. Groups can be pre-established or developed especially for Dance Rites.
- Any performers aged under 18 will need to have a signed guardian authorisation form. This is included within this information pack. Dance Rites participants need to be aged 14 unless otherwise approved by the Sydney Opera House.
Is there a registration fee?
- Yes, the registration fee is $150 per group.
The registration fee is non-refundable and can be paid by credit card, EFT or cheque. Further details can be found on the Registration Form.

What to expect
- Each group will be responsible for their own planning, accommodation and travel to Sydney Opera House.
- The Dance Rites team can provide you with support for fundraising ideas and connections in your region.
- Recommendations for accommodation in Sydney are available.
- Sydney Opera House is a short walk to public transport and is easily accessible.
- The performance will take place on a 12m diameter sand circle, please keep this in mind when choreographing your performance.
- Only accredited participants can access backstage area during event
- Participants must be over 14 years old, unless otherwise approved by the Sydney Opera House.
Your Dance Rites Performance
- Welcome/Arrival dance
- Farewell dance
- ‘Wildcard’ dance
- One of your dances must include a chant in your local language
- You can enter as an all-male, or all female and/or mixed group
- Each of your dances must not exceed 3 minutes
- The Dance Rites judges will consist of community dance and song line custodians, along with professional choreographers and dance practitioners.
- The judges will be looking for authenticity, reclamation work, use of costumes and props along with fusion of language and music.
