  • DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD MAKE A GOOD MENTOR TO A YOUNG PERSON?

Young people need supportive relationships to fulfil their potential. In today’s complex world many young people need more support and could benefit greatly from a relationship with an older person outside their family circle.

The Standing Tall School Based Mentoring Program recruits and trains members of the community to become mentors to students in schools. It has shown that the relationships developed through mentoring can make a real difference.

WE INVITE YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED.

The Standing Tall Mentoring Project is a partnership between Brauer College, Warrnambool College, Emmanuel College, Merri River School and Standing Tall in Warrnambool together with many local community groups. The project is supported and administered by a Project Coordinator and Committee of Management.

Secondary school years are the hardest for many young people. Such students are the ones at risk of leaving school before completing year ten without qualifications and the education to gain meaningful employment. These are the students supported by Standing Tall.

Students who fit the relevant criteria and who wish to be involved in the program receive enormous benefits from the early intervention program and the interest and involvement taken by suitable mentors.

    • Help students who are not coping with their first years of secondary school.
    • Work with young people to help them enjoy their time at school.
    • Reduces absenteeism from participants.
    • Pass on valuable lifeskills and bring about attitude changes and respect by working with an adult.
    • Build self esteem through support and encouragement.
    • Improves respect for themselves, others in the community and community property.
    • Reduces the risk of early disengagement from education to Centrelink dependence.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE RECRUITED TO BECOME MENTORS.

Applicants will be screened by a small selection committee and are required to attend an interview and complete mandatory Working with Children Check. Once approved, mentors complete a free training program to assist them to carry out their role.

Ongoing mentor support is provided in order to continue training, de-brief and share experiences.

Mentors will be required to be available during school hours for approximately 1 hr per week for twelve months and up to two years with the same student.

The program does not run during school holidays and is flexible to mentors time commitments.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor please complete the Standing Tall application form below.

Once received the Program Coordinator will be in touch with you to finalise your appointment.

  • Working With Children Checks and Statutory Declarations.

The Victorian Government has legislated that persons who work with children must undergo checks on their criminal records. Persons who have a conviction for a relevant criminal offence (sex, drug and violent offences) will be prohibited from working with children.

The Working With Children Act creates offences carrying very high penalties for non-compliance and those offences apply not just to the persons working with the children but to their supervisors, organisations employing them and Committee/Board members of organisation in which the people work with children.

The Working With Children Checks will last for five years.

In addition, Standing Tall in Warrnambool Inc. has introduced a Statutory Declaration to be completed by each person required to undergo a Working With Children Check. This declaration covers a variety of matters outside the Working With Children Checks. This must be completed each year. If a person cannot truthfully sign thedeclaration, that person should write to a Child Safety Officer or a member of the Committee of Management in confidence setting out the reason why the declaration cannot be truthfully made. A decision will then be made on whether the person should be working with children. A copy of the declaration is attached.

The Working with Children Act requires all persons working with children to have the check if they have or are likely to have individual and unsupervised contact with children. All Committee members are also required to be screened, whether or not they have individual and unsupervised contact with children.

Applying for Working With Children Checks is relatively easy and free for volunteers. It is similar to applying for a passport and you will need a passport type photograph and appropriate identification similar to opening a new bank account. Forms and an information pack may be obtained from most Post Offices or by calling the WWC Information Line on 1300 652 879. You will need to attend the Post Office personally to lodge the check.

    PARTICIPANT DECLARATION FORM FOR MENTORS

Please respond to each of the 3 questions below. Applicants have the option of a discussion with a member of the Committee of Management Executive (Delegate) rather than answering one or more of the questions.

  • Evidence of a criminal history, that may be unrelated to any risk of harm to children, will not automatically preclude a person from being or remaining engaged as a Program mentor.

The requirement for full and honest disclosure during the screening process shall be a condition of initial and ongoing participation. In signing this form you declare that, if you are successful in your application, you will notify Standing Tall in Warrnambool, Inc. should there be a significant change in your circumstances that relates to the screening process; for example, criminal offence charges and convictions, restraining orders, injunctions, intervention orders, disciplinary proceedings and investigations.
