DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD MAKE A GOOD MENTOR TO A YOUNG PERSON?
Young people need supportive relationships to fulfil their potential. In today’s complex world many young people need more support and could benefit greatly from a relationship with an older person outside their family circle.
The Standing Tall School Based Mentoring Program recruits and trains members of the community to become mentors to students in schools. It has shown that the relationships developed through mentoring can make a real difference.
WE INVITE YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED.
The Standing Tall Mentoring Project is a partnership between Brauer College, Warrnambool College, Emmanuel College, Merri River School and Standing Tall in Warrnambool together with many local community groups. The project is supported and administered by a Project Coordinator and Committee of Management.
Secondary school years are the hardest for many young people. Such students are the ones at risk of leaving school before completing year ten without qualifications and the education to gain meaningful employment. These are the students supported by Standing Tall.
Students who fit the relevant criteria and who wish to be involved in the program receive enormous benefits from the early intervention program and the interest and involvement taken by suitable mentors.
- Help students who are not coping with their first years of secondary school.
- Work with young people to help them enjoy their time at school.
- Reduces absenteeism from participants.
- Pass on valuable lifeskills and bring about attitude changes and respect by working with an adult.
- Build self esteem through support and encouragement.
- Improves respect for themselves, others in the community and community property.
- Reduces the risk of early disengagement from education to Centrelink dependence.
COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE RECRUITED TO BECOME MENTORS.
Applicants will be screened by a small selection committee and are required to attend an interview and complete mandatory Working with Children Check. Once approved, mentors complete a free training program to assist them to carry out their role.
Ongoing mentor support is provided in order to continue training, de-brief and share experiences.
Mentors will be required to be available during school hours for approximately 1 hr per week for twelve months and up to two years with the same student.
The program does not run during school holidays and is flexible to mentors time commitments.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor please complete the Standing Tall application form below.
Once received the Program Coordinator will be in touch with you to finalise your appointment.
