• UNITEC RESEARCH COMPETENCIES

    Self-Evaluation Tool

  • The Unitec Research Competencies apply specifically to research active staff and sit alongside and complement Unitec’s Leadership Competencies (which apply to all staff at Unitec) and Teaching Competencies (which apply to all teaching staff at Unitec).

The competencies below have been developed specifically for Unitec and are intended to help research active staff recognise their existing research competencies, and build on these in a process of continuous development. Each competency is associated with appropriate Professional Development offerings or activities.

  • SELF-EVALUATION PROCESS

The Unitec Research Competencies create a framework for reflection, self-evaluation and continuous improvement for staff at any level of research development and expertise.

This self-evaluation tool is designed to help you identify your strengths and areas for further development as they relate to the Unitec Research Competencies.

You will get the chance to review your results before you submit. Once submitted, a copy of your self-evaluation will be sent to your email address as provided below.

While this tool’s primary purpose is to help you understand where you sit in relation to each of the Research Competencies and what development opportunities you might undertake, it is also recommended that you share your self-evaluation resutls with your manager for use in your ADEP conversations – particularly to inform development planning and goal setting.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact research@unitec.ac.nz

  • Note: Aggregated data will be made available to Tūāpapa Rangahau - Research & Enterprise to inform the design of future development offerings and support.

  • POHATU'S MAURI MODEL

You will be asked to assess yourself against several behavioural statements for each of the competencies using a scale based on Pohatu’s Mauri* Model.

This model focuses on fulfilling one’s potential through journeying to acquire knowledge; where Mauri represents the common centre of an individual from which all energy emanates and from which everything draws. As such Mauri informs how and why activities should be undertaken and monitors how well such activities are progressing towards their intended goals (Pohatu, 2011).

The model, as adapted for self-assessment, acknowledges four states of being; Mauri Moe (an inactive or latent state of being), Mauri Oho (a state of beginning potential where one is actively engaged albeit at an emerging level), Mauri Tū (a state of being awake to possibilities and active participation - where one is able to "stand and deliver") and Mauri Ora (a state of being fully transformative).

When completing the assessment use the brief descriptors below to consider your response:

Mauri Moe Inactive You have not yet demonstrated these behaviours.
Mauri Oho Emerging You have begun to explore opportunities to practice and develop these behaviours but are not yet consistently demonstrating them.
Mauri Tū Demonstrating You consistently demonstrate this competency and actively look for opportunities for further growth.
Mauri Ora Modelling You are considered a role model for this competency and support others to develop in this area.
