This enquiry form is for international candidates only.
For domestic students (Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens), please go to https://study.uwa.edu.au/Research/becoming-a-research-student/organising-a-supervisor for information on organising a supervisor.
Completing and submitting this form is your first step on the path to a research degree in Science at The University of Western Australia (UWA).
The information you provide will help us identify a supervisor for your research project, as well as to assess your eligibility for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidature (e.g. PhD and MPhil), and/or your competitiveness for a scholarship.
Once you submit this form we will respond to you within 10 working days. We look forward to receiving your enquiry.
A HDR is 100% research and the resultant thesis must be a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, for example through the discovery of knowledge, the formulation of theories or the innovative re-interpretation of known data and established ideas.
Applicants to the Higher Degree by Research program must have adequate research preparation. See this web page.
When accepting the offer of a place, you are also accepting the conditions governing the HDR candidancy. You may like to visit the UWA Handbook to read the rules.
This is not an application form, it is a preliminary assessment form and should be used for both PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and MPhil (Master of Philosophy) enquiries.
Unlike undergraduate or postgraduate coursework courses, applications to a PhD/MPhil program are more often as the result of an invitation to apply. This is because undertaking a PhD/MPhil can be likened to a job. You may have the opportunity to talk to a potential supervisor after completing this form.
Your uploaded documents must be in PDF format and to a maximum of 15MB in total for all documents.
Please make sure all documents are legible. Provide all certificates and transcripts in the original language and English translation.

The role of a supervisor is to advise, guide and provide constructive feedback to you through the process of choosing a realistic topic, designing a viable project, doing the research and interpreting the findings and writing the dissertation. For more information, please refer to Organising a Supervisor.
Scholarships - scholarships are very competitive. Applicants with outstanding academic backgrounds are the most successful. You need to have received excellent grades, have undertaken relevant research work and/or and have had or attempted to have had articles published in peer reviewed international journals.
Private - If you indicate that you are privately funded, it is likely that you'll be required to explain how you will support yourself, whilst studying. This is important because tuition fees and living expenses can be very high for international students.
All applicants to the HDR program must demonstrate a level of English language competency to gain admission. This is done by satisfying the minimum requirements of one of the UWA accepted English tests listed at at this web page within the last two years.
Please be reminded that UWA does not accept statements of English proficiency from employers, other tertiary institutions or GRE tests as evidence in meeting the above requirements.
If you are planning to take an English language test in the future, indicate which test you intend to sit and when you plan to sit the test.
Scholarship applicants must have met the English language competency requirement before the scholarship deadline.
The scholarship agency will not accept conditional (on English) offers in the application process.
Start with your most recent qualification.
Usually adequate research preparation is evidenced via "a supervised research dissertation project completed as a program undertaken after a three year, or during a four year, Bachelors degree, carrying the equivalent credit of at least 25% of an annual full-time load and awarded an assessed result at or above distinction level".
Upload a copy of your thesis. You will need to upload the version as submitted for examination; even if written in a language other than English. If not written in English ensure there is an English abstract.
Applicants to all scholarships will be asked to submit their thesis for evaluation, therefore you may wish to consider translating more than just the abstract of your thesis into English and/or ensure that your proposed supervisor can read the language of the thesis.
According to your academic degree transcript(s), choose from the drop box what proportion of a full academic year was awarded to the thesis unit of your Bachelor or Master's degree dissertation/thesis - in credit point value / weight? (for example, was your thesis component 25% or 33% or 50% etc., of a full academic load for that year)
Upload your academic degree transcript that clearly shows each unit undertaken, the credit points for that unit and the result for each unit. Ensure it is a clear copy in PDF format. If you have not yet completed the course, a provisional transcript can be provided, if you have completed the course, a full original academic transcript and a copy translated into English, must be provided.
Pulications may be needed in order for you to be competitive for Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships, dependent on your academic background. If your grades are not extremely good and if you don't have any publications, it is recommended that you continue further work on your academic career and produce high quality peer-reviewed publications, before applying at a later date.
However, you can continue and apply for a full-fee offer, this could then be used to apply for other Australian Government scholarships or sponsorship/scholarship within your home country.
Most required documents should be uploaded by this point, however please also upload your CV/Resume with your academic history and relevant research work experience here.
Please click the 'Submit' button below.

The University offers a number of different scholarships for research applicants. You are expected to submit your Online Enquiry Form at least 30 days before the closing date of the scholarship. Please refer to the scholarships website for the different types of scholarships available to domestic and international students. Please note that competition for these awards is extremely competitive as only a limited number of scholarships are offered at UWA each year. Applicants with exceptional academic records exceeding a First Class Honours degree (80%) or equivalent, research experience including published research reports in high impact journals and who have met English language competency will be more competitive.
