  • UNITEC LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES

    The Unitec Leadership Competencies support our values and are designed to support our people to deliver our kaupapa. 

    These competencies apply to all staff - recognising that we are all leaders at all levels - at Unitec. 

    Competencies are the skills, attributes and behaviours that are essential for success - so for Unitec, our leadership competencies are the skills, attributes and behaviours that we want everybody to be demonstrating to help us achieve the aspirations we have as an organisation. 

    Below are the eight leadership competencies that have been developed for Unitec:

  • These competencies are applicable to all staff, transferable across all roles and, when developed individually and collectively, will enable us to deliver on our purpose:

  • SELF-EVALUATION TOOL

    This self-evaluation tool is designed to help you identify your personal strengths and areas for further development as they relate to the Unitec Leadership Competencies. 

    You will get the chance to review your results before you submit. Once submitted, a copy of your self-evaluation will be sent to your email address as entered at the completion of the assessment.

    Upon submission, your manager will also receive a copy of your self-evaluation for use in your ADEP conversations - particularly to inform development planning.

  • Note: Aggregated data will be made available to People & Infrastructure via learnanddevelop@unitec.ac.nz to inform the design of future development offerings and support.

  • POHATU'S MAURI MODEL

    You will be asked to evaluate yourself against several behavioural statements for each of the competencies using a scale based on Pohatu’s Mauri* Model.

    This model focuses on fulfilling one’s potential through journeying to acquire knowledge; where Mauri represents the common centre of an individual from which all energy emanates and from which everything draws. As such Mauri informs how and why activities should be undertaken and monitors how well such activities are progressing towards their intended goals (Pohatu, 2011).

    The model, as adapted for self-evaluation, acknowledges four states of being; Mauri Moe (an inactive or latent state), Mauri Oho (a state of beginning potential where one is actively engaged albeit at an emerging level), Mauri Tū (a state of being awake to possibilities and active participation - where one is able to "stand and deliver") and Mauri Ora (a state of being fully transformative).

    *Customer in this context means all Unitec stakeholders – colleagues, internal and external customers, Māori, industry, professional bodies, broader community and other stakeholders as applicable to the situation.
