    Referee Grading System

The purpose of this course is to train successful applicants to achieve their C Grade Accreditation.

Basketball Victoria, and by extension Waverley Basketball Association, utilise a letter and number system to grade the compentency of referees. C Grade being the beginner, or lowest level grading recognised. This course utilises 2 additional internal gradings to assist someone who has never formally officiated a game of basketball before in their training & development towards obtaining a C Grade Accreditation.
The referee pathway can be seen in the image below.

    Age Requirement

All participants must be 14 years of age upon commence of the first theory session (Monday July 14).

Please note, those over 18 will be required to have a volunteer Working With Children Check.

    Saturday Availability Requirement

Waverley Basketball is currently experiencing a shortage of referees on Saturday afternoons.

As such, upon being accredited as a C Grade referee, you will only be permitted to referee weekend basketball for the first 3 months, with a specific requirement to be available Saturday afternoons.

If you are not consistently available on Saturday afternoons then please do not apply.

    Course Cost

The course incurs an up-front cost of $175 per person. This cost covers:

    1 x Referee Shirt
    1 x White Shirt
    1 x Green Shirt
    1 x Whistle
    1 x Lanyard
    1 x Referee Jacket
    Basketball Victoria Annual Registration Fee

    Admittance Process

Refereeing basketball can be a tough endeavour at times, with a considerable amount of immediate feedback, especially when learning the skills to be a good referee. We try to create a safe environment for learning and as part of this it's important we only admit those with a suitable temperament for refereeing.

As such, with limited places in the course available, to gain admittance to the C Grade Course a short 10 - 15 minute meet & greet with senior Waverley officials will be conducted. These sessions will be held at Waverley between 4:00pm & 9:00pm on Wednesday July 9th.

Each applicant will be emailed with an assigned time. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend to ask any questions about the referee program, however they will need to leave the room for the formal portion of the interview.

    Course Length

The C Grade Course is run over approximately 8 - 10 weeks* comprising of 3 classroom like education sessions and on-court training sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.

*Length of course is dependent upon individual on-court performance.

    Course Result

The C Grade Course is not graded and is a simple pass/fail course based upon on-court performance. Once passed, participants must referee on Saturday or Sunday competition for the first 3 months. After this 3 month period participants are permitted to referee any day of the week, except Friday. However, there are currently very limited places for mid-week work and we only guarantee weekend work after completion of this course.

Pass/fail of the course will be assessed by the Waverley Basketball Association C Grade Coordinator, Assistant C Grade Coordinator or approved referee coach where coordinators are not available.

If a participant has not passed the course by the 12 week mark then it may be determined that the participant can not continue as a referee at Waverley Basketball Association. In this instance the participant would only be entitled to a refund of the green shirt and referee shirt.
