  • ‘My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.’

    (John 10:27)

  • Where do we go to hear Jesus’ voice? The four Gospels are the obvious place to begin, being filled with extracts from His teaching. They are not the limit, however. In this lesson we will broaden our scope to see that the entirety of the New Testament should be regarded as Jesus’ words.

To begin, read the following passage from the Gospel according to Mark.

  • Mark 3:13-19 And [Jesus] went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons. He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

  • What did Jesus name the twelve?

  • How do these verses support the idea that the words of the Apostles are Jesus’ words?

2 Peter 3:1-2 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,

1 Corinthians 14:37-38  If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.
