• The Trinity - Day 2
There is Only One God
  • What do the following verses emphasise about God?

  • Isaiah 44:6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: "I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.

Isaiah 45:5-6 I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.

  • The Trinity - Day 2
There is Only One God
  • These verses from Isaiah teach the first important truth that makes up the Christian understanding of the Trinity.

  • THE TRINITY

    1. There is one God.

    2. The one God exists as three distinct, simultaneous persons (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit).

    3. Each person is fully God

  • This means that Christians are monotheists (mono = one, theos = God). We believe that there is only one God.

  • The Trinity - Day 2
There is Only One God
  • The belief that there is only one God is fundamental to Trinitarianism. Have a look what happens if we deny this belief.

  • The denial that there is only one God leaves us with three distinct persons who are each fully God. This is called tritheism (tri = three, theos = God), which is the belief that there are three seperate gods.

  • The Trinity - Day 2
There is Only One God
  • Some people reading the Bible notice that it often mentions other gods. For example, it mentions the gods of the Egyptians and the gods of the Babylonians etc. They see that the first of the Ten Commandments says, 'You shall have no other gods before me' (Exodus 20:3). And so they ask the question, "do these things not imply the existance of other gods? How can Christians believe that there is only one God when the Bible seems to imply there are others?"

How would you answer these questions (hint: 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 gives us a clue)?

  • 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "an idol has no real existence," and that "there is no God but one." For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth- as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"- yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

  • The Trinity - Day 1
Introduction to the Trinity
  • In this meditation, we have seen that the Bible teaches monotheism. We have also seen the error in thinking that results from denying this truth. Our understanding of the Trinity must be grounded in the fact that there is only One true God. In the next meditation, we will continue by exploring the second of the three Trinitarian statements: The one God exists as three distinct, simultaneous persons.

Until then may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
