INVERCLYDE RENEWABLES LLP - INVERCLYDE WINDFARM
10 x 110m turbines, new roads, quarry and substation Application No: 13 / 0199 / IC
Please note that I / we object to the proposals for the following reasons:
SAVE OUR REGIONAL PARK - Windfarm power stations should not be built in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park (CMRP) or any other designated Park. It is totally contrary to the Inverclyde Local Plan and the Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Joint Structure Plan.
TOURISM - The development would impact severely on the significant tourist trade, which sustains long term employment for a considerable and increasing number of residents in the many small towns and villages around the entire Park area. The wind turbines would be visible from a vast area in the CMRP, The River / Firth of Clyde and the Central Belt and would ruin an area of outstanding beauty.
WATER POLLUTION - Such a development could seriously disrupt the watercourses flowing from Corlic Hill and could contaminate private water supplies, lochs, dams and rivers that support wild salmon, otters and birds.
SPECIAL PROTECTION AREA (SPA) - CMRP is privileged to be home to a rare population of breeding Hen Harriers and Black Grouse. Norwegian and other experience has shown that birds of prey are killed by wind turbines and will permanently abandon breeding sites. The site is adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area and needs our protection.
PEAT BOG DESTRUCTION - Peat bogs and blanket bog in this Park have been capturing CO2 emissions for thousands of years. The building of a windfarm would curtail this CO2 capture and go a long way to defeating the purpose of installing the wind turbines in the same area.
POTENTIAL WINDFARM EXPANSION – There are already 4 major windfarms too many in the Park, 28 giant turbines and other small turbines in Clyde Muirshiel; any more is unacceptable. ‘Form’ tells us that if this development was approved, the developer would be very likely to apply for additional turbines.
REDUCED HOUSE VALUATIONS – It is confirmed by Surveyors that the value of houses fall in the area around wind farms.
DANGEROUS - Turbine blades can break off, throw ice in winter and turbines can fall over and go on fire. They are a danger to people, birds and animals and are not suitable in Parks.
INEFFECIVE WAY OF REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS - The development will result in very limited CO2 emission savings because of the necessity to provide conventional power station back-up for 70% of the time when windfarms cannot operate.
POOR ALTERNATIVE - Published research findings conclude that wind power is the worst of non-fossil fuel generation alternatives, with between 28 to 36 grams of CO2 produced per unit of electricity (kWh) generated.
NOISE – The windfarm will put some residents at risk because of an unacceptable level of noise from this site. The recommended distance from residences is 2 Km.
SUBSONIC AND OTHER NOISE- Research has been carried out on the effects of sub-sonic noise & Infrasound, which this development could produce. This may have serious health implications for some people, especially those within 2 Km of the turbines of which there are many.
FLICKER - Some of the population facing this development could suffer from the effects of visual flicker from both sun and moon
DESTRUCTION OF THE ECO-SYSTEM - The construction of miles of roads, turbine bases, associated quarrying work, cable trenching, substation and new power lines would have a disastrous effect on the fragile eco-systems on this moor.
INTERNATIONALLY IMPORTANT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Corlic Hill & Lurg Moor have iron age structures, Roman Fortlet, Roman road & abandoned 18th, 19th and 20th Century farms with rig and furrow marks, walls and roads from various periods. The site has potential to become a major research area and tourist attraction for Inverclyde.
RADAR DISRUPTIION - This area is within a short distance of Glasgow airport. Revolving turbines cause radar blind spots, which can put people’s lives, in the air and on the ground, at risk.
'FAT CATS’ - Energy prices have risen sharply over the last 2 years and are now above the level believed necessary by the Scottish Executive to encourage windfarm development. The Renewable Obligation Certificate subsidy paid by customers is providing ‘fat cat’ profits to developers and landowners and encourages inappropriate developments.
