• Jesus on Prayer - Day 8

    <br />Your Will be Done
  • Matthew 6:9

    Pray then like this:

    "Our Father in heaven,

    hallowed by your name.

    Your kingdom come

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

  • How would you define the ‘will of God’ in light of the following passage?

  • Matthew 7:21-23   "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'  And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'

  • Can you think of two ways in which the will of God is obeyed in heaven? (Hint: think about the manner of obedience)

  • When we pray "Your will be done," we ought to think through all this petition entails and pray intelligently. You can study the prayers of Paul for examples of what to pray in relation to this request. Read the following example. What kinds of things do we need so as to live lives of joyful obedience?

  • Colossians 1:9-12 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,  10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.  11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy,  12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

  • Think about your life at the moment. What particular area of your life are you struggling to bring into joyful conformity with God’s will?

  • Spend a few minutes praying through the first three requests of the Lord’s Prayer.

  • In this meditation we have seen that Jesus calls us to pray for joyful, perfect obedience to God.

In the next meditation, we will look at the fourth petition of the Lord's Prayer.

Until then may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
