• Jesus on Prayer - Day 7

    <br />Your Kingdom Come
  • Matthew 6:9

    Pray then like this:

    "Our Father in heaven,

    hallowed by your name.

    Your kingdom come..."

  • In one sense, God’s kingdom is universal. He is on the throne of the universe and reigns over all. But the Bible also speaks about the kingdom of God in a different sense. In this sense the kingdom began with the coming of Jesus.

  • Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,  and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

  • Consider Colossians 1:13-14. What do you think it means for God’s kingdom to come?

  • Colossians 1:13-14 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,  in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  • The Lord’s Prayer is a model for us. That means we shouldn't pray, "Your kingdom come" and then move on to something else. Jesus wants us to be gripped by this petition, think through all it entails and then pray intelligently. The following verses show us what this request involves. Try to complete each sentence.

  • Your kingdom come entails:

  • Romans 10:1  Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.
  • Matthew 9:37-38 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;  therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

  • Colossians 4:3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison-

  • 2 Thessalonians 3:1 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you,

  • Spend a few minutes praying through the first two requests of the Lord’s Prayer.

  • In this meditation we have seen that Jesus calls us to be secondarily concerned for the coming of God's kingdom.

In the next meditation, we will look at the third petition of the Lord's Prayer.

Until then may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
