• Repentance - Day 2
What is Repentance?
  • Matthew 3:8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

  • What is the relationship between repentance and fruit bearing?

  • Repentance - Day 2
What is Repentance?
  • In Luke 6:43-45, Jesus gives us insight into the source of human behaviour (fruit). What is the ultimate source of our behaviour (i.e. from where does our fruit come)?

  • Luke 6:43-45 For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  • What does it mean to treasure something?

  • Repentance - Day 2
What is Repentance?
  • The Greek word for repentance (metanoeō) literally means ‘a change of mind’. Read Luke 6:43-45 again. What kind of ‘mind change’ do you think repentance brings about?

  • Luke 6:43-45 "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  • Repentance - Day 2
What is Repentance?
  • Think back over the fruit (i.e. actions, thoughts, feelings) that was produced in your life yesterday. What does your fruit indicate about the treasure of your heart?

  • Prayer Point: Ask God to help you treasure good rather than evil.

  • Repentance - Day 2
What is Repentance?
  • In this meditation we have seen that repentance is an internal change of mind, whereby we turn from treasuring evil to treasuring good. This leads inevitably to an outward change of life, because our fruit grows out of our treasure.

In the next meditation, we will connect this understanding of repentance to the kingdom of God.

Until then may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
