• The Word of God - Day 2
Guided by the Spirit
  • In the previous study, we saw that Jesus speaks through His Apostles. In this study we look at how we can be sure the Apostles were reliable spokesmen. Throughout the Gospels, the Apostles seem to repeatedly misunderstand Jesus. How can we be sure they got it right?

  • The Word of God - Day 2
Guided by the Spirit
  • What promises in the following two passages of Scripture give you confidence in the accuracy of the Apostle’s teaching.

  • John 14:25-26 "These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."

John 16:12-15 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that He will take what is mine and declare it to you. "

  • In light of what you have just learned, how would you respond to this person?

  • "The Apostles wrote several decades after the events. How can we be sure they remembered everything accurately?"

  • The Word of God - Day 2
Guided by the Spirit
  • How would you respond to this person?

  • "Ok, so they remembered Jesus' words accurately. But during Jesus' ministry, the Apostles often misunderstood what Jesus meant. How do we know that their teaching is correct?"

  • The Word of God - Day 2
Guided by the Spirit
  • In this meditation we have seen that the promised Holy Spirit guarantees the reliability of the Apostles' teaching. He is the Spirit of truth, and as such guided the Apostles into a truthful understanding and presentation of Jesus.

In the next meditation, we will consider what Jesus taught and believed about the nature of the Old Testament Scriptures.

Until then may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
